Week Four

Tuesday, May 21:

Today after a few days back with the Techs I was up front working reception again. As the first day after a long weekend, it was unsurprisingly a busy day and to make things more interesting we had to update cornerstone today. We were without a front desk computer until 9 and then it wasn't until 1030 that we had both updated.  After the update, I worked through the confirmation calls for Wednesday's appointments. The day flew by pretty quickly because of how steady the phone lines were. We were supposed to have the three of us up front but Marrissa had to go to the ER due to pneumonia and her doctor told her for the safety of the baby she has to rest for the rest of the week.

The filing drawers were reorganized to make room for the growing number of new clients that were coming in and the fullness of the drawers. This made pulling files in the afternoon trickier since the drawers weren't yet relabelled but I still managed to pull files for the recalls for most of the week.

Wednesday, May 22:

With the filing cabinet drawers relabelled it was much easier to find files. We certainly were less busy than we were yesterday since there was no computer update, but the new version of cornerstone definitely was a big change. Today I noticed the changes more since we weren't trying to catch up as much from the long weekend. We had lots of ferrets come in today and that made me really happy.  Two of the ferrets I met had been camping with their humans over the long weekend and they were so sweet.

Thursday, May 23:

Today I got to hold another snake while she was force-fed by tube. This particular corn snake was 14 years old so she was much quieter and didn't try to move around nearly as much as the one last week.  We had a unique situation today because of a client who has in the past been difficult to handle. Everyone expected her to be really harsh towards me but she never was but she definitely not happy. Her roommate brought in their bird and she had a credit on her file. Credits get automatically applied to one of the techs who was talking to her roommate about medication asked if he wanted to use the credit. He said sure but it turns out that was for food later. I took the blame over the phone because I wasn't about to say someone else applied it when she was already not happy that she didn't recognize me.  In the end, her roommate agreed to put the credit back on her file and the client thanked us for our help through the situation.

The rest of the day was fairly normal. I had my final review with the Doctors/ Owners and they thanked me for everything I had done. They liked how well I took all their feedback from the first review and they wished me the best of luck since they know I am relocating to Edmonton. They told me they had never had a student pick up on everything so quickly. Their kind words made me a bit emotional because as I told them I really appreciate the opportunity they gave me by giving me this practicum.

Friday, May 24:

Today is my final day at Calgary Avian and Exotic Pet Clinic and it was a surreal day. It was largely the same daily tasks but I tried to get as much done in terms of pulling files for Monday's appointments since neither of the main receptionists are in on Saturday it will just be Kyla, the Veterinary Assistant.  I had the chance to chat with some amazing clients today who came in with various animals. Some I have seen many times and a few came in less frequently. We only had three new clients today.

Remember Leonardo the iguana who had his tail amputated, well he is doing very well. His owners were one of the last appointments of the day. We have tried to tell his owners he needs to be in a carrier but they insist on carrying him in so we brought him straight into a room. They say well that they have been keeping him from climbing and running too much he is very active.

My last phone call was, unfortunately, to book in-room euthanasia for an older ferret who was not doing well but I made sure the client got an appointment as soon as possible with the vet who knew his ferret the best. I finished the day by putting Gary the dove to bed by carrying him to his cage out back where he won't set off the alarm.

This is a ferret sedated dental that got done this week. This is why it is crucial that we brush the teeth of our pets, and get regular dental checks for them. Sedated surgery is not a minor thing.

Week One

Day One: April 29 Arrived at Calgary Avian and Exotics Clinic at 845AM and was introduced to everyone and shown around the clinic. I am observing Nicki today. She is super organized so it will be great learning from her. She got me to pull the files needed for Wednesday’s appointment and then I created the new patient folders for Wednesday so they have the proper paperwork in there. I was also shown how to clean the exam rooms so I helped with that. I think the biggest learning opportunity of the day was witnessing a client checking out after their rabbit was euthanized. I have been told due to the lifespan of some exotics euthanasia and death is more frequent than in some clinics. Day Two: April 30 Today started out very busy. I saw a rabbit going to a new home. There were quite a few birds who came in.  I observed Marissa make making recalls to clients which were great to listen in on. Before lunch, Nikki taught me some of the most common bird breeds they see. I learn...

Week Three

Monday, May 13th: This morning was busy like all Monday morning. Created a lot of new appointments and moved around some as well. We had a new client show not show up for her appointment so I called and left a voicemail to find out what happened. I did the confirmation calls for tomorrow’s appointments and a lot of filing. At two I will be meeting withone of the Doctors to make sure we are on trackwith everything that I need to do over the practicum.  The afternoon was a lot of the same things. Booked appointments, checked people out and checked people in.  Tuesday: Today I booked an in room euthanasia. It was my first time experiencing a client crying on the phone but the Doctor had discussed the option of euthanasia at the end of their last appointment so she decided it was time. She will be in tomorrow afternoon because I didn’t want to keep her waiting for an appointment after making such a tough decision. Wednesday, May 15th: Today I am mostly outback with the techs obser...
